Hydrangea arborescens - smooth hydrangea, sevenbark |
||
Hydrangea arborescens This North American species ( south and center of the U.S.) are the first Hydrangeas that reached our regions ( 1736 ) , the wild form has screen -shaped flowers and practically no sterile flowers . The plant was also used by Native Americans and early settlers for medicinal purposes ( kidney problems ) . In Western Europe , this species is best known for the popular cultivars : Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' and 'Grandiflora' , recently there were some new varieties introduced: Hydrangea arborescens ' Invincibelle ' and Hyndrangea arborescens ' Incredible' . These species are all very hardy , easy to maintain , since they bloom on new wood ( always produce flowers ) and do well in both full sun and dense shade . Most species , like the wild variety tends to get a little to proliferate and form colonies. Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' and 'Grandiflora' have only one major drawback , the flowers are so large and heavy that due to heavy rain and wind they can collapse and fall open, a little support is necessary. |
